This is my last chance to add something to the Blue Squares photo challenge. Thanks to Becky for organizing this great challenge. July has been a month of highs and lows for us, with uncertain outcomes and altered plans, so it seemed fitting to finish with a selection of bits and bobs. The first image was captured at Congo River mini golf where the ducks felt safer on dry land than they did in the water, probably because that’s where most of the balls were landing.
The next shot was taken at Arlington Park where we put a bet on number three and it turned out to be a winner. The odds weren’t great and we only risked a minimal sum but a win’s a win!
Spending the day at Navy Pier with two of our granddaughters, we got to see the ‘boys in blue’ take off in a helicopter probably on their way to patrol the lakefront.
Blue gondolas on the Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier. We got a great view of the city from the top.
More car parts from Volo Auto Museum. I don’t know the first thing about cars but I love all the colors and the shiny bits!
The current subject for Nancy Merrill’s A Photo A Week Challenge is Boats and Ships. My earliest recollection of boats comes from when I was a small child and we went on a sightseeing trip down the river Thames in London. Since then my water-going experiences have been limited to a ferry-crossing to Mackinac Island, the occasional trip down the Chicago river, a couple of outings with the Des Plaines Yacht Club on Lake Opeka, and one or two other sightseeing excursions on rivers and lakes. I’ve never been on an ocean liner or cruise ship so I don’t know whether sea sickness would be a problem and since I’m never likely to find out, it will forever remain a question unanswered.

Cee invites us to listen to the music for this week’s Black & White Photo Challenge. I remember my uncle once saying to me many years ago, “How can anyone live in a world without music?” Good question! I know I couldn’t. Not that I can play any kind of musical instrument and I certainly couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket, as the saying goes, but I can appreciate listening to those who can.
The late Oliver Colbentson, onetime Concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, showed a wonderful passion for his music. I always enjoyed going to the recitals that he gave later in his life and he graciously allowed me to take photos at one such performance.
A sing-song on one of the pirate ships for Halloween some years ago at Navy Pier in Chicago.
This gentleman kindly allowed me to take some shots as he prepared to play for the Orchid Festival at the Chicago Botanic Garden a couple of years ago. I think his name is David Chiriboga and he did a splendid job.
A guitarist with a slightly different style of music playing at the Farmers Market at Wheeler Historic Farm in Salt Lake County, Utah.
Another performer at the Farmers Market in Utah, this young man’s enthusiasm for his music seemed inexhaustible. He played for what seemed like hours. It was definitely different!

My thanks, once again, to Sue Llewellyn for affording me the opportunity to share some pictures of windows in response to her Word A Week Photograph Challenge on A Word In Your Ear at http://suellewellyn2011.wordpress.com/2014/09/10/a-word-a-week-photograph-challenge-window/.
Although I’ve already shown images of some of the windows at the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows on Navy Pier in Chicago in previous posts, I still had a few left that I thought might be worth a look.
I particularly liked the window depicting The Fairy Tale of The Bear Attacking Other Animals created in 1997 by artist Khaim Pinkhasik.
I love orange! It’s such a vibrant color! Wherever I go I’m always on the lookout for bright colors and I had no problem finding images that I hope will adequately represent Orange, in response to Ailsa’s Travel Theme challenge on Where’s My Backpack? at http://wheresmybackpack.com/2014/08/22/travel-theme-orange/.
Somehow, purely by chance, I nearly always seem to show up at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett, Illinois during a special event. At the end of July when we visited, there appeared to be some kind of Youth Conference in progress. People at the Mandir are always very friendly and willing to explain what is happening and we were told that the participants were from all across the country. From what I understood, these young people were there to learn about the Hindu faith and its place in the world today. We arrived just as they were taking group photos outside the temple and out of respect we stayed well back, so we had rather limited access but I managed to capture a few images once everyone had dispersed. The figures in the above image were ceremoniously placed on the steps of the Mandir and the colors really stood out against the white stonework of the temple.
Orange canna lilies are just tall enough to catch the setting sun on the Esplanade at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
An orange place setting caught everyone’s eye at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier in Chicago earlier this year.
